In our course research paper, wewill be researching the one of our major literary selections from both aformalist and contextualist approach. Each student will select one of theoptions (based on personal interest) listed below to research in the paper:
Option 1: Beowulf
Option 2: The Canterbury Tales
Option 3: Morte DArthur
Option 4: Doctor Faustus
Option 5: The Tempest
Option 6: Paradise Lost
Option 7: Gullivers Travels
After selecting one of theseoptions, students should begin collecting reliable sources to help them in thewriting of their paper. In the paper, students will complete three key goals. First, the student will identifyand describe cultural conditions of England in which the work was first createdand written. If the narrative began as an oral tradition, the student shoulddiscuss any changes or transitions that occurred during the process ofcommitting the work to paper. Next, students will discuss major themes in the work and how these themes are aproduct of/relevant to the environment that created the work in the first place. In this section, student should attempt to establish a clear purpose the authorhad for the work and discuss whether or not the author was successful in thispurpose. Finally, students should discuss the universal applications of thework. In other words, students should attempt to explain why the work is stillrelevant today. As a bonus, students may explore how the work has influenced orcontinues to influence modern popular culture.
In composing this paper, studentsmust use a minimum of five sources and may use no more than seven sources. Atleast two of the sources must be primary sources (one of these primary sources should be the actual work ofliterature being researched).
Students will be required to submita working bibliography, annotated bibliography, and a formal outline in orderto receive instructor feedback and guidance throughout the composition process.
All sources listed on the finalbibliography must be cited in the research paper and documented on the WorksCited page according to MLA guidelines. Resources for successfullyaccomplishing such citation and documentation will be provided and practiced insubsequent weeks. Source material should be used sparingly as evidence tosupport the writers opinions and thesis. Source material (either quoted orparaphrased) should not exceed 20% of the total paper. In other, words the vastmajority of the paper should be the writers original thoughts on the topic.
Begin thinking and working on thispaper quickly in order to achieve the best grade possible. Waiting until thelast minute limits your ability to receive and use instructor feedback.
