Hepatitis can be so serious because our liver has so many different functions: filtering blood that comes directly from the digestive system to protect us from ingested toxins, producing bile to emulsify fats so we can digest them, making proteins that help our blood clot after injury, storing energy as glycogen, processing hemoglobin for oxygen transport, producing immune factors…the list goes on and on.  A virus that targets this tissue can have devastating effects!  But people with hepatitis can survive for years.
