Question: In week 7 (chapters 13 and 14 of your textbook), we discussed behavioral and psychological factors that affect health behavior. Your textbook provided several examples of how people can change their health behavior and how some things are out of their control. One of the key ways we discussed this was through exploring several health behavior change theories. In the lecture I gave a detailed example of how to use the socio-ecological model to encourage smoking cessation and the transtheoretical model to encourage healthier eating. (Note: I have included an example from the lecture at the end of this assignment description.)

Dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, romaine, collards) are a rich source of fiber, beta-carotene, and lutein. These nutrients may help lower the risk of colon, prostate (fiber), stomach (beta-carotene), and breast (lutein) cancers as part of a healthy diet. In addition to other types of vegetables, the USDA recommends that the average person consume at least 1 ½ cups of dark green vegetables every week.

(Hint: We discussed health belief model in Week 7 and we discussed physical activity in Week 8 – you should be able to find all the information you need for this assignment between the two weeks)

Socio-Ecological Model Constructs

List one way you could target an intervention to address this socio-ecological model construct (be creative – these don’t need sources)

Public policy

After you have filled in the chart explain why developing public health interventions (e.g., advertisements, health education, media reporting, conversations with health care providers, policies) can help improve a population’s health. Remember, in public health we are focusing on populations; in other words, we are trying to reach more than one person at a time with our programming. (Length: approximately 150 words)

Describe two psychological factors that contribute to the eating dark green vegetables in the United States. Explain how the two psychological factors affect eating dark green vegetables at the population level within the US, not just the individual level. (Suggested length: 150 words)

Socio-Ecological Model Constructs

List one way you could target an intervention to address this socio-ecological model construct (be creative – these don’t need sources)

Commercials targeting young adults that inform them of the dangers of vaping.

In health education classes in elementary schools, encourage students to talk to their families about vaping.

Health insurance policies that give bonus to people who do not vape based on health screenings.

Community classes that teach about the harms of vaping.

Policies that prohibit vaping in shares spaces, limit the stores that can sell vaping products, and funding that supports research and health promotion on vaping.
